These included mines, torpedoes and some of the first ironclad ships, which had the capacity to destroy large numbers of the North's wooden sailing ships without hazard to themselves. The South created new weapons to counter the North's naval strength. The blockade was described by Laurence Russell as "like a leaky bucket." However, it did greatly hinder the Confederacy's chances of winning the war. The Union Navy, stronger than the Confederate Navy, attempted to blockade ports to prevent European supplies from reaching Southern troops, but Union ships couldn't be everywhere. I was surprised to learn that an active port existed on the Chattahoochee River, several hundred miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and that the city of Columbus played a significant role in the Civil War as a ship-building center and manufacturer of supplies. The only museum entirely dedicated to the naval battles between the Union and the Confederate armies is the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus, Ga.
